Also, they kill the cub so the mother stops lactating and can reproduce again. The faster they can mate with a female, the higher the likelihood they will still be strong enough to protect their pride and the more likely their offspring will reach adulthood. It's all about passing on genes.

its nature that a new male lion which has taken over a territory kills the cubs which are fathered by the previous male so the females which are not mothers anymore come into heat soon within a few days A lion can only hold its territory for a mere 2 years b4 the nxt tak over.The cubs will b dependant on their mothers for 2 years so if he dosent kill em he cant ensure his own gene........one should note d the lion which killed the othermales cubs will fight till death to protect his own

Just because lions fight back doesn't mean there's purpose. If someone goes out and hunts a lion for fun, there's no purpose.
